Tweaking 1ksons 1850

So I've been toying around with my 1ksons list and looking at ways to squeeze some more out of it.  Now I know that by playing thousands sons, purist or otherwise, I'm already kind of shooting myself from having 'uber competitive' list either way.  Still they've been fun and I think they will be a great army to play for fun once they're all done.

So first I have to look at what I think the army could use.
-Cheaper Troop Option
-Anti Horde help
-Anti MC help

Tall orders I know.  I know I probably need more anti tank also to beat the heavy mech armies, but I just don't think I can get it all but I'm trying to keep that in mind.

So what can I cut?  Options would be:
-Rhino EA- 45 pts cut that did little, and really is probably just better used on other things.
-Cut the terminators, or shave them down to just 3 guys with Combi Meltas.  I really enjoyed using them, and the 3 Combi Meltas are pretty nice anti tank so I'd rather lean to cutting a few guys and the IoT if I really need to do so.
-Cut the 3rd 1ksons squad, and put in other troops.

Now the last option there is bitter sweet.  I'm playing 1ksons, so the whole point is that they're you're only 'marine' variant.  However it's clear as day why something else is needed in the troop department.  The first thought is Lesser Daemons.  They're cheap, they're scoring, and they can tie up units I want to stay away from.  Just cutting 1 squad of sons and the EA from two remaining rhinos would let me add 3x9 lesser daemons.  Very tempting...

But then I only have two icons to start on the table (3 if I include the IoT on terminators assuming I keep them).  Now the 1ksons really don't 'poof' like other troop choices so you would think 2 might be enough, but I'm not entirely sold  on that idea either.

So if I get a little less stringent on the purist 1ksons army I could add some regular CSMs.  My biggest question here would be what to do with them.  I could use them as objective squatters and put something like a 10 man las/plas squad out there.  Or I could do the more usual 2 melta squad in a rhino, though again I'm not sure it make sense either as I more have the 'rearguard' type unit in mind.

So now I'm wondering if I take 2 Plasma guns in a unit of 10.  That would be good for shooting MCs and terminators which could also be a problem.  Plus if it has to be a sitting on an objective it could still have a 24" threat for light armor.  Plus I'll definitely need the Icon of glory at the very least.

Ideally I'd like to add a champ with a fist, but I think I've run out of points.  Let's take a look.

Prince, Wings, Warptime- 155
5 Terminators, 3 CombiMelta, 1 Powerfist, 1 Heavy Flamer, IoT- 215
8 Thousand sons, 1 Sorc w/ Warptime, Melta Bombs, Icon, Rhino- 314
8 Thousand sons, 1 Sorc w/ Warptime, Melta Bombs, Icon, Rhino- 314
9 Marines w 2 Plasmaguns, IoG, Champ w/ Fist, Rhino- 265
9 Lesser Daemons- 117
Predator Autocannon, Lascannon Sponsoon- 130
Predator Autocannon, Lascannon Sponsoons- 130
3x Oblits- 225

Total 1865

So damn, where to cut?
Cheap options would be:
Melta Bombs off Sorcs- Hope they never get charged by dreads.
Fist off of terminators- Ditto, but since they are tank hunting I think that is foolish.
HF off of terminators- Probably not a bad cut right there for 5 points.
Icon of Glory off of CSMs- Well I could live without the reroll, but now I loose that Icon I might need.
Cut fist off of the Champ- Go with a PW to save 10 pts, or just go with a MB and save 20.

Any thoughts out there?  The good news is these are all options so I can go pick up some new toys and so long as I continue to magnet arms on a Champ and Plasma/Melta guys I could do some trial and error.

Lessons from Sat

So here's where my second squad of sons ended up before the game on Sat.  I finished the base of the gold and got them on the bases.  I still need to finish the last of the base colors (green eyes and boltgun metal) and then can get to work on the shading/highlighting of the non blue.  Then of course the Bolters themselves.  So still a good clip of work that probably takes another two weeks.

In the meantime I get to reflect on my 1ksons list.  Here's what I took on Sat.

Prince, Wings, Warptime
5 Terminators, 3 CombiMelta, 1 Chainfist, 1 Heavy Flamer, IoT
8 Thousand sons, 1 Sorc w/ Warptime, Melta Bombs, Icon
Rhino, EA
8 Thousand sons, 1 Sorc w/ Warptime, Melta Bombs, Icon
Rhino, EA
8 Thousand sons, 1 Sorc w/ Warptime, Melta Bombs, Icon
Rhino, EA
Predator Autocannon, Lascannon Sponsoons
Predator Autocannon, Lascannon Sponsoons
3x Oblits

Here's how it worked out for me by unit.

Prince
Game 1:  Killed the Podding Libby dread, then killed off Assault termies, then popped a rhino but lost his last wound to the explosion (hilarious I know).
Game 2: Flew around, popped a raider, stayed close to routing DE jetbikes so they ran, got shot to pieces.
Game 3: Charged some Hive Gaurd and creamed them, then died in the counter charge of Trygon and Stealers

All in all pretty solid for the points.  Even kept cheap (no mark and no 2nd power) he adds in that combat ability and extra tank hunting.  You know he's going to always die, its just about getting as much as you can out of him.  Really as much as I don't want to run dual princes it is hard to argue why you wouldn't at 2k or higher.

Terminators
Game 1: Came down and popped a Razorback, killed some marines, and moved off to contest and objecitve.
Game 2: Came down and took a number of wounds off the Talos by combi melta, Heavy flamed a squad of warriors, kept one other unit of warriors routing, and died in a hail of bullets.
Game 3: Started on the board, took some shots and gaunts, only managed 1 W on the Trygon with Meltas and totally died without wounding the Trygon in CC.

So game 3 I think I misplaced them and misused them, but the other two games they did great.  The Icon itself was useful, but oddly he ended up being the first guy to die in random rolls of 1s to fail armor in the first two games.  The chainfist was never used so it might be overkill.  The Flamer was actually useful in game 2, but I'm not sure if losing it would be heartbreaking or not since even with out it frying 6 warriors I would have charged and probably done enough to get the same result.  I'm also considering changing one Combi Melta to Combi Plasma.  That would make all 5 guys something different but also lend to shooting MCs which I had to do in 2 of 3 games.  That may be coincidence but I'm considering it anyway.

1ksons squads
Game 1:  Warptime worked great and the Hood failed most of the time, meaning they held their own in combat.  With all those rerolls the squad could hold up the BAs in combat and that let me hold on to two objectives.
Game 2: Well they really did a number on the DE jetbike squad, and I felt bad because I made some assumptions that Hank new what he was walking into by moving up to two squads.  (Oh Ap3 bolters, Oh 4+ Invul save, Oh Fearless, OH Warptime Foreceweapons... are you making this all up as we go?)  So yes they saw 600 pts of bikes/hqs off with 600 pts of sons... granted I didn't take any losses.  Anywho from there the two squads advanced and killed some warriors, but by turn 7 were whittled away and unable to hold the objective.  The third squad sat on my rear objective and did nothing all game.
Game 3: One squad did kill 3 Zoanthropes, another died in combat with Gaunts.  We called the game on turn 3 when we realized I couldn't do anything from that point onward.

So they were good and they continue to surprise me, and my opponents, in what they CAN do.  However it's a lot of points when they 'don't' do what you paid for.  320 pts to sit on an objective is a waste.  Warptime not working certainly hurts.  Everybody getting cover hurts.  Etc.

A note on the rhinos- EA never paid off once.  They died or were immobilized.  That was it.  So there is 45 points that didn't make a damn bit of difference, and while I might rely on icons more in the future I think I'll save those points.

Predators
Game 1: Blood Lanced to death (both of them) on Turn 1 by drop pod libby dread.
Game 2: They lasted a good clip of time, shooting to kill off a Talos and work on some skimmers (can't recall if they killed one or two but certainly lots of 1-4 results).
Game 3: They added firepower focused on the Tyrant and Gaurd, eventually killing the Gaurd but Tyrant lived with 1 W when we called it.  One Pred died to Stealer assault, the other turrent-less one would have died to the Stealers shortly.

So meh, not the worlds greatest performance overall.  However for the points they do put out a good clip of firepower.  However that firepower didn't really do me 'much' good.  So the verdict is kinda still out on these two.  Better deployment in Game 1 and 3 might have helped, so I'll need to do some more runs with these.

Obliterators
Game 1: I think they shot one Terminator, and they killed a Razorback, and even eventually charged into a Sarg and Priest that were about to finish off a squad of sons to save their bacon.
Game 2: I forgot to shoot them turn 1 (they were too camoflauged in terrain!) and they eventually downed a Ravager.
Game 3: Assisted Predators in wound Tyrant/Gaurd, charged by Gaunts in turn 3 (one died, two remained in CC)

Were they useful?  Yes.  Were they the end all be all?  Not really.  Were they 225 pts of awesome?  I'm going with no on these games.  But they lived (game 3 would have seen them eventually die) where the predators certainly had more issues with that department.

Really I'm mostly torn about my heavy support.  It's hard to imagine not having long range support but I have to wonder if 500 pts of more DP/Troop/Terminators couldn't actually be more useful.

So now I'm going to sit down and have a think about what to try next for these guys at 1850.

Fun Times Sat

So 10 of us got together at Liam's house for a big game night.  What a blast!  I'm a bit wiped out today so I'm not going to really reflect on the games/list I had and just put up some pics.

Before the games started I snapped a few pics of a few armies that were ready to roll.
Liam's army for the day.  Sister's are always fun and I think they had a pretty good night.
Here's Jason's bugs, who I would play in my last game.  It did not go well for me. :)
Ryan's Eldar are coming together nicely.  I think he's just got more work on the Seer bikes but it is looking great.
Dave's Space Wolves now with reduced model count. :)
Here's a shot of David's SWs getting swarmed by Jason's bugs.
Collin's also played bugs and here he's up against Pat's Nurgly Daemons.
Ryan's started the night with Hank's DE.  Having not played them before I think he got a taste of what the pain they can bring.
Liam's sisters running up with Andy's BA.
A few shot's of my game with Josh.
Josh's Podding Libby Dread popped both my Pred's turn 1.  Then the pred was mauled by the DP.
Then the DP mauled the terminators (and lived with 1 wound).
Other random shots, but cool to see one of Jason's table's all set up.  It was nice to play on some new terrain.
The only shot of my game with Jason.  I deployed poorly and made some bad choices this game, but either way I just don't think this army can deal with bugs.

I was thinking I would get more pictures but of course once we got under way I sorta blanked out (as per normal).  I didn't get a single pic of my game with Hank's DE.

It was a great time and most people got 2-3 games and got to hang out with pizza and beer.  Fun times.

A little progress...

3 guys have the first gold base coat done, 5 are about 1/2 way there.

When you only have an hour a night to commit to the hobby it can be pretty slow going.  In the three days I've had this week I've only gotten a bit of gold trim done on this squad of 1ksons.

I was really hoping I was going to get all of the base coating at lest complete before the weekend, but now I'm just going to be happy if I can finish the gold.  That would leave the boltgun metal, the green eyes, and a few detail bits.  It is very slow going and of course I'm not the worlds greatest/fastest painter anyway.

Maybe I'll have some time before heading out Sat AM and I can get the boltgun metal down too, but I doubt it.  It would just be nice to have those bits done before I set them on their resin bases.

Sunday, July 18, 2010

I've been busy working on my 1ksons this week and weekend.  Most of the time during the week I've been slowly plugging away at my 8 guys for the 2nd squad.  Right now I've got the blue done and the base of the yellow.  Here are some crappy pictures. :P

I also spent some time with the airbrush this weekend.  I wanted to get all the stuff I had primered white hit with some blues.  So I brought out my Belakor model, did a couple of shades of blue, and gave it a heavy dose of my Asurmen blue wash.  I think the wash was super concentrated because he came out really dark.
I also went to town on the tanks.  I've never done more than a base coat on a vehicle before, so this was a big learning event for how to try different shades to create some contrast.
I think they came out pretty good, if not a bit too light.  I think I'll go over a bit of them with some new (less concentrated) blue wash to try to blend a little and darken a few bits, but overall I'm pretty happy.  It will be better than looking at white tanks on Sat.

I also hit the terminators with a solid blue.  There are little bits I see I've missed, none really matter though as I'll eventually do lots of layers on these guys anyway.
So I feel like I got a lot done.  I'm going to try to get that 2nd Troop squad at least all base coated so I can put them on their resin bases.  They'll be gunless but at least they'll be usable.  I was hoping to get a bit more work on the DP as well so I could glue him to the base but I doubt that will happen.  I'll just have to muddle with him on Sat unattached.  Good thing he always dies in the opening turns anyway! :p

Other 1850 Options

So I don't really think I'll take Orks are Templar, but it doesn't stop me from day dreaming about what I could try out if I change my mind late next week.

Orks 1850
Ghaz
Mek, KFF
9 Lootas
9 Lootas
19 Shootas w/ 2 Big Shootas, Nob PK/Pole
29 Slugga boyz w/ 3 Rokkits, Nob PK/Pole
18 'Ard Boyz, Nob PK/Pole
3 Manz w/ 2 Combi in BW w/ Armor, Grot Riggers, Deffrolla, BS
Buggie w/ Rokkits
Buggie w/ Rokkits
3 Kans w/ Rokkits
BW w/ Armor, Deffrolla, BS

This is basically a trimmed down from my 2k list, cutting Snikrot and adding some rokkits in the walking squad.  It's totally painted and ready to go.  Sure I'd like to try out dropping the Kans for even more Lootas, but they're  not built and I'd rather keep plugging away on my 1ksons.

Templar Pods 1850

Well I'd pretty much run what I had at Kubla, which is not really exciting to me.   I still think I'll keeping podding to 1500 pts  for now, or maybe try it out again at some ridiculous 2500pt type game.  Really of all my armies I want to see updated it is Templar.  It used to be Tau, but Templar are just so sad compared to the newer SW and BA.  Tau don't have something as easy to compare, so while they might be dated it is harder to say 'they need to be more like XYZ' so its a little easier to stomach I suppose.

Of course both are probably years away from new book, and eventually will then both pop one after the other.

Tau 1850

So the other army I'm thinking about taking on our big Sat game day is Tau.  My Tau got seriously wrecked at the 1500 tournament, but as it had been nearly a year since playing them I felt a bit rusty and looking back I can find plenty of tactical errors on my part.  Not to mention I'd redo that list as well to take even less troops and more guns/speed bumps.

I'm thinking with the extra points I can field a pretty nice army that should be able to put a good clip firepower with bubble wrap to keep those assaults off of me.

Shas'El Plasma/MP, HWMT, TL
2x Crisis Plasma/MP, HWMT
2x Crisis Plasma/MP, HWMT
2x Crisis Plasma/MP, HWMT
6 Firewarrios
10 Kroot, 7 Kroot Hounds
10 Kroot, 7 Kroot Hounds
2 Piranha w/ Fusion Blasters, 1 Disruption Pod, 1 Target Array, 1 Seeker Missile
2 Piranha w/ Fusion Blasters, 1 Disruption Pod, 1 Target Array, 1 Seeker Missile
8 Pathfinders, Devilfish w/ DP, TA, HWMT, SMS
2 Broadsides, ASS, TL, 2 Shield Drones
Hammerhead, DP, SMS, TL, MT
Hammerhead, DP, SMS, TL, MT

It isn't a lot on the table but it is a lot of guns, but also a ton of KP (16).  The Piranha and Kroot should be enough buffer to slow down the enemy from assault, and I should be laying down lots of high Str low AP shots.  I've never been this light on troops at 1850 and considering how easy it is to vaporize Kroot and wipe out FWs it might not work out well for me.  In the end I think this army is going to be all about killing the other army as dead as possible.

There's a good clip not painted (2 Piranha, 14 Kroot Hounds) but everything is assembled and ready to go unlike my 1ksons.  Given there will be 1-3 other chaos players it might be nice for the group to get something else in the mix.

The question is will I actually have fun playing them (the tourny was a little brutal) or would I have more fun with something else.

Thousand Sons Terminators Wip

So I got some work done on my 1ksons terminators over the past week.  All the arms are magnetized so I can swap all those handy chaos options as I see fit.  I built the new headdress bits out of plasticard and I think they came out ok.  It is hard to see that them in the above pic because of the damn flash I thought I had turned off but they have lines in them that hopefully when painted will make them look right at home with the 1ksons troops.

The other bit of conversion done here is on the PWs.  I had seen some one online use bits from the Tomb kings weapons and I wanted to do the same.  I made mine a little different but overall I think the affect is great in giving them that Egyptian feel.

I have one more head bit on the way, and also some tzeench scorery books which I'm going to use as Icons (magnetized) for all my units and that will finish up the modeling.  If I can get that done this week I'll probably bust out the airbrush this weekend and do some massive 'Blue-ifying' of all my primered units.

As for what I'd use this all for here is an 1850 Thousand Sons list I'd like to try.

DP, Wings, Warptime
5 Terminators, 1 Chainfist, 3 Combimeltas, 1 Heavy Flamer, Icon of Tzeentch
8 Thousands sons w/ Personal Icon, 1 Sorcerer, Warptime, Metlta Bombs
Rhino, Extra Armor
8 Thousands sons w/ Personal Icon, 1 Sorcerer, Warptime, Metlta Bombs
Rhino, Extra Armor
8 Thousands sons w/ Personal Icon, 1 Sorcerer, Warptime, Metlta Bombs
Rhino, Extra Armor
Predator, Autocannon/Las Sponsoons
Predator, Autocannon/Las Sponsoons
3 Obliterators

It's not a lot but it could be fun.  The only thing I'm debating is if I want it to have... well a better chance at doing well is to use CSMs for that 3rd troop choice.  Of course I don't own them so... the above list using Liam's borrowed sons may be the way I have to go.  This is also assuming I can get that second squad painted and on the bases.

We'll see, I'm not 100% sold on using sons anyway, but I am longing to get some games in with them.

What 1850 Army to Play

So the next thing on my gaming calender is a 1850 get together with friends.  It looks like we should have 6-8 people so we should be able to get a good run of games in over the course of the afternoon/evening.  So the question is what army do I take?

Thousand Sons- I'd kind of like take 1ksons since I haven't put them on the table in quite awhile.  The downside is my Terminators are still under construction, and one squad of sons is in mid painting with no bases.  I'm sure I could get it together if I really pushed in the next two weeks, but that's kind of what I'm against doing for this army.  I could also just fake it a bit (use just the bases, proxy with templar) and since it's just with friends that would be fine I'm sure.

**Another hilarious bit I just thought of, there could potentially be 4 chaos marine armies, and we could actually pull off each of the themed armies if Liam chose to run Khrone heavy, as Pat usually runs Nurgle and David usually runs Slaneesh themed.  haha

Tau- I just played them and got my ass handed to me on a plate.  I'm not sure I wouldn't just see a repeat.  However I play them so rarely that I never really can apply the lessons learned from said ass whopping to the next games.  I'm tempted to bring them out again and see if I can have a little momentum with them.  Sure a few units would be unpainted but not a tournament so who cares.

Orks-  Certainly my most competitive army I think.  Orks have seen play in the recent Capitol Punishment tournament and Ard Boyz but I've also had them out for a few friendly games as well.  They are pretty much ready to go, or I can try to go Loota crazy and that might be a nice to try out, but it also may make my friend punch me in the face.  Repeatedly.

Templar- I'm a little burned on Templar since I ran them pretty solid for 6 months.  The drop pod strategy was fun, but I think it kind of gets less effective at 1850, plus the last 3 codecs really are not the best match ups for BT, in particular SW and BA basically can do what Templar do but better.  I could try a few new tricks out, but as my other 'tournament ready' army I might prefer to save them for a day where being fully painted and WYSIWYG counts for something.

So I guess I'll just keep plugging away at my 1ksons, and draw up a few lists for the armies and just see how I feel before heading over in two weeks!

Vote for Pedro

Josh made this custom Pedro awhile ago and I told him I would paint it.  It's been several months and I hadn't made any progress, but I was determined to do it this weekend since I don't have any 'must get models painted by X tournament' on the horizon.

It was fun to paint something new and work on blending.  I can already see a few things I now want to go touch up a little after looking at these pics.  Josh doesn't have his basing theme picked out yet so I couldn't 'finish' the model.

Josh had made his ammo chain out of green stuff, but it was just a strip.  I tried to paint it to make it look like it had some depth.

Josh had given me a few other guys so I could try to match them together.  Overall I think it came out pretty well.
Man I have got to build myself a light box... these pictures are so meh it hurts. :p

My Once a Year Tau Outing

So I had to run out of state for business this week somewhat unexpectedly so I obviously didn't post, but I also didn't get to spend much time thinking about the 1500pt tournament that was scheduled today.  I figured it would be a light showing since it was the holiday and figured I would bring out Tau as I haven't played them for a year.

It turns out we had 15 and I think the breakdown was something like this: 3 IG, 2 Marines, 2 BA, 2 SW, 2 Nids, 2 Tau (no kidding), 1 DE and 1 Nurgle Daemon.

I decided to try a bit of new stuff but still required nothing in the way of heavy construction/paint.

Shas'El, Twin Missile Pods, HW Blacksun Filter, Target Lock, Target Array
2x Crisis, Plasma/Missile Pod, HWMT
2x Crisis, Plasma/Missile Pod, HWMT
2x Crisis, Plasma/Missile Pod, HWMT
20 Kroot
6 Firewarriors
6 Firewarriors, Devilfish, SMS, DP, MT, TA
6 Pathfinders, Devilfish, SMS, DP, MT, TA
Broadside, A.S.S., Gun Drone, Shield Drone
Hammerhead, Railgun, SMS, DP, MT, TL
Hammerhead, Railgun, SMS, DP, MT, TL

I put the HQ with the Kroot to make a big squad with a decent LD and that actually worked out pretty well (didn't have hounds painted otherwise I would have taken some of them).  I took more Plasma than I used to and cut one Broadside which I had never done.

I'm a bit exhausted, and really none of the games went well.  I'll just give a quick run down.

Game 1 was with a mech IG, 2 shots of the army below.  It was basically corner deployment with 5 objectives.

Basically we traded shots all game and jockeyed around for position.  In the end we each had an objective, and he contested my kroot that spread for two objectives.  Big fat tie.

Game 2 was with Andy's Blood Angels. I didn't really get a good shot of his army, but it was basically Dante with 3 Priests, 2 jump pack troops, and assault troops in a LR.  This was basically VP game where we each had an objective for some more VP.

I set up poorly, he Deepstriked his two jump packs in perfect position, and I could never kill his LR.  I think that pretty much sums it up.  FNP and cover made my life just horrible and with my crap deployment I could just not get anything going.  Basically tabled.

Game 3 was IG again, this time a KP game where you had to kill the whole FOC slot to get the KP.  Of course he has two huge squads with platoons, so I get the IG army that has less KP than I do.  Oh and HQ is 3 kp, Elite, Fast, Heavy are 2 kp, Troops are 1 kp.
This game was all about fail at shooting, and for the first 3 turns it was pretty even.  I think he managed to kill a Crisis team and I killed a Valk.  We both had so many 1s on the Vehicle Damage chart (both on pens and modified by glances) it was ridiculous.  Alas by turn 4 he turned it around and killed a few more units to pull out the win.  So another loss, but a game that was odd and could have gone either way but just didn't.

So this will be my once a year tournament for Tau.  It was enough to remind me I don't enjoy them as much as the other armies I have.  I think there's a few things I would change which I'll note down to basically remind myself for next year when I bring them out again.

-FWs suck, and if you think taking 2 at 1500 (or perhaps even higher) is helpful it isn't.  Those SMS aren't killing enough and you can't hold objectives with them for jack and shit.  If you want more troops take more kroot squads.

-More firepower.  That's what really matters with Tau.

-I'm unsure about A.S.S. on the single Broadside.  Maybe with two it is more important, but I couldn't hit crap, and I really missed the TA for BS 4.

-Deployment matters I think more with Tau then any other army I have.  They are not very forgiving if you find yourself making a few errors early.

Given that I would make the few changes to 1500.

Shas'El, Twin Missile Pods, HW Blacksun Filter, Target Lock, Target Array
2x Crisis, Plasma/Missile Pod, HWMT
2x Crisis, Plasma/Missile Pod, HWMT
2x Crisis, Plasma/Missile Pod, HWMT
10 Kroot, 7 Hounds
10 Kroot, 7 Hounds
6 Firewarriors
6 Pathfinders, Devilfish, SMS, DP, MT, TA
2x Broadside, Team Leader, TL, 2x Shield Drone, with TA for both
Hammerhead, Railgun, SMS, DP, MT, TL
Hammerhead, Railgun, SMS, DP, MT, TL

Who knows when I'll pull them out again, but I'm guessing 2011.  Maybe by then I'll paint those hounds!
